THE PAINTING EXHIBITION OF STUDENTS OF THE CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION OF ARTWORKS STUDY PROGRAMME
FRAGMENTS OF STORIES
The exhibition “Fragments of Stories” conducted by first-year students of the Conservation and Restoration of Artworks study programme of the Academy of Arts of the Faculty of Arts and Education of Kauno kolegija Higher Education Institution represents students’ skills of analysing the techniques used to create the works and carried out initial historical art research.
The copies of fragments of the exhibited paintings are executed using the same painting technique as the authentic paintings, which requires preventive conservation. Eglė Aleknaitė, the coordinator of the Conservation and Restoration of Artworks study programme ant the curator of the exhibition curator, says that to study the artist’s drawing, to understand the idea behind the artwork, to empathise with the painting is essential for the restorer, and this is achieved through the use of coping techniques. It develops art skills and enables one to delve deeper into the technique used by the author, the paints, and the painting grounds.
Paintings were chosen individually, taking into account each student’s strongest personality traits. All the first-year students performed the same task – after selecting a fragment of the painting’s composition, they created an exact copy.
The modern restorer must be an artist, a technologist, and a even a historian because his daily work involves processes based on science and technology. The photographs of paintings by Martynas Jurgutis, Media Project Coordinator of Kauno kolegija Higher Education Institution, accompanying each of the exhibited fragment of the painting’s composition, provide an opportunity to look at the overall picture of the artwork and to realise how much can be seen and felt by a restorer.
